Sankara Nethralaya – Temple of Eye

Sankara Nethralaya USA (SN USA) is a fund-raising arm in the US which was established in 1988 with the sole objective of raising funds for Nethralaya to provide free services to indigent patients. SN USA is managed by 35 honorary trustees spread across 17 chapters and 3 chapters with non-trustees .SN USA has been raising over a million dollars per annum for the last several years.

Nethralaya professionals have been awarded numerous awards for their outstanding accomplishments. Our founder Dr. S S Badrinath was honored with the prestigious awards of Padma Bhushan and Living Legend for his outstanding public service. Newsweek ranked Sankara Nethralaya as the fourth best Ophthalmic institution and one of the top hundred hospitals in the world. SN USA was given the highest rating of 4 stars by the prestigious rating organization, Charity Navigator.


Inspired by a speech given by the Pontiff of Kanchi Kamakoti Mutt in 1974, Dr. S S Badrinath founded Sankara Nethralaya (SN) in 1978 with the sole objective of providing world class eye care for free to the poor and at an affordable price to others. Nethralaya also holds eye camps, school screenings, and an eye bank. Mobile Eye Surgical Unit (MESU) is a unique service and the only one of its kind approved by the Government of India. MESU consists of two buses – one serves as a patient preparatory room and the other as an operation theater. These buses go to remote villages, perform various ophthalmic procedures such as cataractsurgeries on 150 to 200 patients over a two-week period, and return to base hospital after post-operative care.

Over the years, Nethralaya has treated over a million patients from all over India, and its neighboring countries such as Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Pakistan, Oman, Mauritius, and Saudi Arabia. Daily, we treat 3,000 outpatients and perform 300 surgeries. 50% of outpatients are treated for free, and 35% of the surgeries are performed at no cost to indigent patients. Currently, we have 2 MESUs – one in Chennai and the other in Jharkhand. These MESUs cover the states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and West Bengal. In January 2024, we are going to inaugurate our 3rd MESU unit in Hyderabad, which will cover the entire state of Telangana and will serve up to a radius of 500 km from the base hospital.
